There are a whole manner of different decisions to make when you play poker and it is how you make the right moves and actions that will ultimately result in you being a
winner or loser at the poker tables.
To help you understand the most common actions and decisions we have put together the guide below, make sure you learn it fully as without this information in the forefront of your mind when you next play poker it could cost you your bankroll!
Ante - This is a mandatory wager and unlike a Blind bet where only two players make an initial wager an Ante must be placed by ALL players. An Ante bet is
commonly found in Stud Poker Games.
All-In - An All-In wager is when you place all your remaining chips into the pot.
Bad Beat - This is a term not an action and refers to a very high ranking hand being beaten by an even bigger and unexpected poker hand.
Big Blind - A compulsory wager made by all players once, in turn, per cycle of the players around the poker table
Small Blind- Another compulsory wager made by all players once, in turn, per cycle of the players around the poker table
Bust - This is when you have lost all your chips and are effectively out of the game.
Buy-in - This is a pre set amount of money you will be charged usually in a poker tournament to take part, I.E. an entry fee.
Cap - A Cap is a preset limit amount on the final raise in a game of poker.
Check - This is when you place no bets during a round, if all players after and before you check then no one pays anything during that round.
Drop - Another name for folding your hand.
Muck - Discarding and folding your hand.
No Limit - In No Limit games there is no maximum bet, you can place as much as you have into the pot.
Post - This is when you place a compulsory bet into the pot.
Pot Limit - In Pot limit games the maximum you can place into a pot is the total current value of the pot.
Raising - You should only ever bet when you think your hand has a good chance of winning, this is also true of raising. If you raise with a low hand you are on average giving your money away.
Raising - Pre-Flop - Being the first player to enter the pot puts you in a good position and you should consider raising if you consider your hand to be fairly strong, as it most probably is at that current moment.
Raising - The Flop - The Flop is a telling time and you can often judge whether your hand is up against a better hand at this point, an aggressive Raiser at the point will be very revealing and you should
consider what cards are showing and where that places your hand.
Raising - The Turn and the River - As a Raiser at the Turn or the River you should be confident that your hand has every chance of winning, some people may bluff you but you must do the maths based on your hand and the potential cards that are out their based solely on the Community cards.
Re-Raise - This is when you raise a bet that has already been raised.
Showdown - At the last stage of a poker game the Showdown is when the remaining players all show their hands.
Side Pot - A side pot is created when a poker player goes all in but their are still players in the game and thus all further bets get placed in this new pot.
